How it works

Decide which crawlers you allow, on purpose
GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and the rest are separate decisions with separate consequences. Most sites have never made that decision - they inherited a robots file from a template and are now either blocking the channel they want to win or open to one they never considered.

Check what the crawler receives
Not what the CMS shows. Content that appears after a client-side fetch may be invisible to a retriever that does not execute scripts, and the page will look perfectly fine to everyone on the team.

Make the important claims survive extraction
A retriever pulls fragments. Anything that depends on a heading three sections up, on a table caption or on a tooltip loses its meaning on the way out.

Watch who actually fetches
Server logs say which AI crawlers came, how often and what they took. That turns the whole discussion from theory into a number - and it is the fastest way to find out that a robots rule is silently costing you the channel.
